-1817 - Retired to his estate, "Montpelier", in Orange County, Virginia-1826 - After the death of Jefferson, followed Jefferson as the second President of the University of Virginia
-1829 - Delegate in the Virginia Constitutional Convention
-1836 - Died in the Montpelier Mansion in Orange County, Virginia
-Internment in the private family cemetary on the grounds of Montpelier
